In my opinion the best types for pain relief have always been strong indicas, I would highly suggest a good kush those always help my back when it's hurting bad.
Nimbis:
I use indicas or indica dominant strains for pain and sleep. I use the capsule method. Grind up weed (then use a fine screen to screen off the kief) and bake at 200f for 25 minutes. Stuff weed in gelcaps size 0 or 00 (regrind in coffee grinder to get more into the capsules without really packing it in). With the majority of the resin screened off, you're left with mainly the CBDs in the meds, which are responsible for the pain relief, anti-inflammation and drowsiness.
You can get capsules and loading trays from eBay for cheap. Try one as needed or I take one at about 4pm and another around 8pm and sleep like a baby w/out getting up all night. Just my 2 cents . . ..

Also, edibles tend to be less head and more body high, generally better for pain, and will last 4-6 hours vs smoking 2-4 hours.
A simple way to do this is to make into butter and then bake into your favorite foods.
Look for decarboxylated oil edibles. Nothing else will compare, it is much stronger and they have to use less oil. Theoretically it should be cheaper but they will probably charge more for the not so special "decarb" process.
Edibles for pain
Combustion for fun!
